A Worthing Borough Council Distinction in Building Award has been won by the Mahaan Indian Restaurant for its shop fronts in Montague Street, Worthing.
This is the first year that shop fronts have featured as a separate category in the awards scheme.
The restaurant occupies two adjacent shop units and is in the process of expanding into a third.
The citation said that the original shop fronts had been spoiled by inappropriate alterations, including deep fascias which obscured much attractive, original detail and ornament on the building.
"The Mahaan Restaurant removed the deep fascias to reveal and repair the original detailing and reinstated
shop fronts of traditional design using surviving remnants as references for replicating mouldings on new timber members," said the citation.
"The signing on the new traditional fascias comprises individual letters which are internally illuminated to give a halo of soft light. This subtle illumination enhances the overall high-quality effect of the design."
